Seven handwritten letters of the Reuben Champion family. Five letters are written by Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Champion to his sister, Mrs. Paoli Lathrop (née Elizabeth Brewster Champion). Two of the five are addressed from Sacramento, two from California mining towns, and one from San Francisco. All are signed "Frank" or "Frank C." Two other letters are written by an acquaintance of Frank Champion, a merchant from Sacramento, Lorenzo Hamilton. One is addressed to Frank's sister, Mrs. P. Lathrop, and the other is addressed to Frank's father, Reuben Champion. Frank Champion's letters include many references to his being sick. Lorenzo Hamilton's letters also reference Frank's ill health and that he would be returning home accompanied by other acquaintances of Hamilton. It appears that whatever brought Frank to California in 1854, possibly to be a merchant in the mining areas, has been eclipsed by his health issues by 1856 and his general dislike of California. In his earliest letter, dated July 14, 1854, he describes San Francisco as a "one horse town" that he does not like.

The Reuben Champion family lived in the vicinities of West Springfield and Hadley Springs, Massachusetts. Reuben Champion was a well-regarded doctor and married to Pema Stebbins (1786-1866). They had two children, Benjamin Franklin Champion and Elizabeth Brewer Champion.

Lorenzo Hamilton (1819-1868) was a merchant in Sacramento, California. He died July 20, 1868 from a brain concussion after falling down stairs at the Central Pacific Railroad office in Sacramento.
